What is Umami?

Inherently savoury or meaty – Umami has been described as that meaty or satisfying flavour that makes for a mouth-watering dish.

Umami is the fifth element of taste along with sweet, salty, sour and bitter. This Japanese term, loosely translated means something along the lines of "pleasant savoury taste."
